On behalf of the Berguño Hurtado family we thank you all for attending the ceremony. It was only recently that we found out about the departure of our beloved uncle, Tio Raul, as he was known to us; and, due to the short notice and large geographical distances, we were not be able to make it to the funeral. But we are greatly comforted to know that he is surrounded by his dear friends from Sun Valley, his dear friends from the choir and his friends from Idaho. Tio Raul was very much loved by us all and by everyone who met him. He would bring joy and laughter with his presence. We will cherish the fond memories of the time we spent with him, and remember his marvellous anecdotes drawn from a life rich in adventures. He was a humorous man, a fun man, and a great story teller who would entertain us endlessly. Tio Raul lived life to the full and in his own way right up to his last days. In his last year he travelled all around Europe, the United States and Chile; visiting friends and family. So, in a way, he had the chance to spend a last time with all and every one, a chance to say “Farewell” in his own inimitable manner. Up to the last minute he did it "his own way." Raul, we (your nephews and niece) will always remember you and carry you in our hearts! Jorge, Francisco, Fernando, Felipe and Paula Berguño

Tio Raul, Uncle Raul, What can I say about you. Still I have fresh in my memory the first time that we met. That was in a day of April 1990 at the driveway of your house in Nampa. We were just waiting for you and suddenly you arrived in your unforgettable brown and beige Volkswagen Vanagonon. You opened the door and jumped out of your seat like a happy teenager running to greeting us without even knowing us. We were my wife Viola, my little 7 months old son Vicente and myself. You were coming back with tia Sonia from the office at the Nampa School District that afternoon where both of you worked. That was love at first sight. I was impressed first with the agility of your jump from the vans, then I was impressed with your charm and happiness to meet us. No doubt was love at first sight. We all loved you that day and forever. That first encounter was the beginning of an incredible journey of life for us knowing you and your beloved tia Sonia. We learned your life was a perpetual movement full of dynamic and love for the neighbor and humanity. Life was always a new adventure to be around you. You had a big heart and received us at your home helping us to start our new life as new immigrants to this bless land called America. You and tia Sonia were our only family here in this country for all these years. You were here when four years after my daughter Sarah was born and you saw us grow as family and became citizens in this magnificent land. Years passing by and we shared unforgettable moments of pure joy and laugh all together. Just recently one day tia Sonia departed and now has been your time to leave us. I am honoring the great man that you were in our lives. In the name of my two kids Vicente and Sarah, and myself, thanks tio Raul for the time shared, for the wonderful life together in many moments. Thanks for everything that you did for us. Thanks for your generosity, thanks for your great love for us, thanks for sharing your wisdom and happiness. God is with you now. You are in HIS hands.

In this time of loss my heartfelt sympathies reach out to Raul's family and friends. Raul leaves behind a legacy of unforgetable memories to each of us. He opened the world to us as we traveled with he and Sonia. Each year, by mid-July, when summer school ended, Raul usually had planned a new vacation adventure for us. Around the world and across cultures , he was our mentor. From music to sailing he was our guide. Raul will be forever in our hearts.

I never saw Raul upset, I never saw him not get along with someone. I have never seen someone make friends with such ease. In a matter of minutes he would go from asking a stranger for directions to sharing fond memories. He had the biggest heart, sharing his love with everyone. He lived such a full life, sharing that joy with everyone.

Some of my earliest memories are visits from Raul and Sonia. Every time we met with them meant a day of laughter and joy. The way he would spontaneously get on the piano shaped my taste in music. In my childhood, the stories of his adventures with Sonia travelling around the world kept a restless me frozen in my seat, filled with anticipation to hear how they were able to make it home safe. Hearing his stories as an adult filled me with inspiration and ambition to lead a life more like his.

Raul and Sonia were nothing but love, with me, my family, with friends, and strangers; in their case, soon to be friends.

He lived such a grand life and had such an impact on mine. I think of him constantly and strive to live day-by-day carrying joy the way that he did. I miss you dearly querido Tío Raul, nos vemos pronto.

We wish to extend our sincere sympathy to the family. We also wish to say what a privilege to know Raul as well as Sonia. They were a joy and a profound influence in our lives. Our daughter was guided by their direction in her education and it was good. We were blessed to know them. God bless all of you.

Story shared: Two Gems of the Valley

Sonia and Raul were two gems of this valley. They were everywhere and always present, connecting with people, telling stories, encouraging others, and celebrating all that life has to offer. I will remember how proud they were of Sonia's hundreds of "children" she had from her decades of teaching, and how proud Raul was for his contributions to agriculural science. My heart always lifted when I saw them and I am sure that many others shared the same experience. I know Raul and Sonia are in a special place together, continuing their celebration of life in another way and cheering on the rest of the world they left behind. Raul was carrying on bravely without Sonia and I was thrilled to hear he had bought a new Mercedes. He lived life to the fullest until the very end. I am sending my love and condolences to their family and friends near and far.
