			<description><![CDATA[A couple of corrections:
- Jeff was Ross Youngman's younger brother, not his older.
- The Green Slime was a Maverick, not a Pinto.
Also, I would like to add that Ross was devoted to Pioneer Cabin and the Pioneer Cabin trail. He did trail maintenance every year, and packed a lot of trash out of the cabin and a lot of supplies to it. 			<description><![CDATA[It’s been many years now since Ross Youngman has been gone, but he’s not forgotten. Ketchum is a poorer place without him. I was his neighbor in the 80s, and we struck up a friendship that lasted many years. He introduced me to the woman who later became by wife. When I first met him, he was living in what was basically a shed with his piranha fish Fang, barely any heat and no running water. I think that even electricity was a relatively new thing, because he had an elaborate home-built solar system powering up a bunch of car batteries. He liked to get high (though he never drank) and seemed like a pretty wild guy, which he was. He was compiling material for a history of Sun Valley, which involved a lot of hiking around on old ski lift and dump sites. He liked to hike in general, particularly to Pioneer Cabin, and didn’t mind being out in bad weather. He was fascinated with animals, rocks and artifacts, and was always coming up with something new and unusual. He had many highly colorful friends. There were two or three Triumph cars in the yard, none of them working. He conspicuously drove a 75 Ford Pinto called the Green Slime. He always had cats, favoring the big fluffy furball types. He was an unapologetic audio snob, with a great collection of records and a stereo system second to none. A full set of the Encyclopedia Britannica was ready to hand and frequently referred to. He would hit me up for $20 loans all the time and I was always a sucker enough to give them, which were mostly repaid. You couldn’t be too concerned about something like that with a guy like Ross.
His older brother had died in a climbing accident on Goat Peak in the Pioneers, and this haunted Ross. One time he climbed up by himself to the airy saddle between Goat and the Spitzl in his brother’s memory. He had a hangout under a rock ledge along the Pioneer Cabin trail, where he would spend a lot of time just watching what was going on around him, which often included passing animals.
He had a .22 rifle, and we went shooting frequently. He drank Coca-Cola by the case, and so there were always lots of cans available, which we would fill with water to produce a satisfying “explosion”. Eventually he started borrowing my deer rifle to go hunting, mostly for elk at which he proved quite successful. He started working regularly at Mountain Motors and used the money to fix up a working Triumph, buy a TV and acquire a sizeable collection of guns. His friend Ean James moved to town and it was at a Thanksgiving dinner with Ean and Ross that I was introduced to Ean’s neighbor Kate. I will be forever grateful for that.
I think that his health declined much more than he would let on in his last years. Although still friendly and funny, he started showing flashes of anger and became more isolated. When his parents passed he inherited some money but it did not make any real difference. Money was not something Ross cared about very much. He tried moving away from Ketchum, but was so settled here there was no way he could live anywhere else. You’d have to live here to fully get that – I’m that way myself after forty years.
He moved back and did not really re-connect. He deliberately avoided people, which was sad because he had a lot to offer and could have used some help, which of course he would never ask for. There was no obituary in the local paper and as far as I know, no memorial. That Ketchum has so completely forgotten him says something about how this town has changed. Maybe if he’d been homeless, which he all but was, he’d have been some kind of adopted street angel like Orville or Shenandoah, both of whom have memorials in the Ketchum Cemetery. But Ross, who gave shelter to both of those people when he had nothing else to give was never recognized even though he was well acquainted with many residents of this little town. He was part of the soul of Ketchum. He deserved better. May your soul rest in peace, old friend.]]></description>			<category>Condolences</category>

			<description><![CDATA[I heard about Ross' passing today.  Very sad, even though I had not spoken with him for many years.  Ross was a mentor and role model to me in my youth.  He was a strong all-mountain skier, an avid outdoorsman/mountain man, and he could fix any automobile or machinery ever built.  He had many happy years living in Ketchum since the 1970's. Lots of people knew him and of him.  He was a collector of stories and a teller of tales. He had intelligence and knowledge far beyond his schooling. I'm glad that I was able to share good times and adventures with him. I won't forget him.]]></description>			<category>Condolences</category>
